The story

Two richly painted lions bring a lively presence to a shelf or collected interior. Turquoise, rose pink, yellow and white follow the contours of their oversized faces and raised bases. Their slightly different expressions and irregular brushwork give the pair a personal, handmade quality.

These figures are offered as Gaomi clay lion candleholders. Gaomi, in Shandong, is associated with the Niejiazhuang clay sculpture tradition, known for expressive forms and vivid colour. Here, that visual energy is concentrated in a small domestic object: a spirited pair to enjoy for its colour, modelling and individuality.

Attribution note

The painted fronts, exposed coarse rear surfaces, moulded relief and top openings support the description of painted clay candleholders. The regional attribution comes from the seller and is visually plausible; a named workshop, production date and connection to a particular maker have not been established. The photographs alone do not distinguish an older example from later work in the same tradition.
