The story
The shallow circular form places most of the emphasis on the surface. Faint goldfish engraving emerges through a mottled yellow-brown field, while the low rim has a cooler grey tone. Its worn finish is part of what makes the pattern reveal itself gradually rather than read like a new, sharply cut design.
Today it can gather a few non-food objects on a console or serve as a decorative base for a table arrangement. Protect delicate furniture from the underside, and avoid assuming food or hot-tea suitability without testing.
Attribution note
Chinese engraved metal tray; seller suggests late Qing/early Republican, unverified.
